Put a Bird On It!
(an indulgent, self-humored post)
I love my new Aquastorm turfstone driveway! Sure, it’s still settling. Sure, the groundcovers and grasses need to fill in. But, what’s not to love about replacing a tired, impervious asphalt driveway with something more modernly sustainable? Could it be better? Fans of Portlandia (2011-2018) know it could use something more to catch the eye of clients. So, I thought I’d Put a Bird On It! Look how adorable! My driveway looks spruced up.
The American Robin is so handsome as she perfectly poses by my 2020 Honda Odyssey. She defiantly adds that Hipster vibe that is worthy of Bryce Shivers and Lisa Eversman.

Now we are getting real. More birds are better.

Now, I can prove that have a since of design and I’m wildlife friendly! Now, I can take the 4 foot “Wildlife Friendly” sign out of my front yard. Since I live on a .19 acre plot in a heavily populated suburban area, I need the space back. The four foot high sign is blocking my sun.
Back to the bird activity on my driveway…
We MIGHT be getting out of control. I’m now finding deep holes and groundcover that has been cast aside like trash. They are also taking their “snow rage” out on my sidewalk. The question is, “Will the Aronia survive after being completely, and quite literally, undermined by entire population of Annapolis American Robins?
Sidewalk as Robin diner table.
It may be a mess, but I’ve enjoyed seeing the robins and rabbits foraging on the driveway when everything but cement and asphalt are covered by snow and ice. Full disclosure - I’ll be happy when they go back to their winter digging routine in my yard and leave my hardscaping alone.
And, in the mean time, I will continue to miss tongue-in-cheek Hipster humor.
*I do not have a connection with Certified Wildlife Friendly. “We seek to mainstream the concept of wildlife friendly enterprise and products via the Certified Wildlife Friendly® and Predator Friendly® logos.” Please visit their wordpress site to learn more about their mission. I do not actually have a 4 foot high sign welcoming cougars into my neighborhood. It may work some places, but the years of finding suitable cougar habitat in Annapolis have passed/are to come/wont be happing anytime soon.
