A glowing flower under the melting snow.

For the first time in a couple weeks, the snow and ice are starting to REALLY melt. The 20 degree Fahrenheit high that the Annapolis, Maryland area has been “enjoying” has detoured many living organisms from going about their usual routine. But, under the snow, miracles were still working. I got to see one of my little miracles today, the winter aconite, Eranthis hyemalis. Enough snow has melted along my front path that this ephemeral from France pokes through to soak up the sun.

Winter aconite, Eranthis hyemalis is a woodland flower that hails from the woodlands of France and Italy. Here, parred with our native Woodland Stonecrop, Sedum ternatum.

In a few weeks, the Winter Aconite will look like this (photo courtesy of the same plant from last winter)
